“An island of freedom in a sea of communism:” this phrase defined West Berlin for most of the second half of the 20th century. For over 28 years, this part of Berlin – home of artists, the avant-guard scene and endless nights of decadence – was isolated from the rest of the world by the Berlin Wall.
