westberlin

“An island of freedom in a sea of communism:” this phrase defined West Berlin for most of the second half of the 20th century. For over 28 years, this part of Berlin – home of artists, the avant-guard scene and endless nights of decadence – was isolated from the rest of the world by the Berlin Wall. This extensive exploration of the western part of the city takes you from Berlin's pre-history, through the gardens of Charlottenburg Palace and the oldest house in the city, to the Sony center on Potsdamer Platz, and includes the site where the members of Operation Valkyrie were executed.
