During the 20th century alone Berlin housed fascists, witnessed the devastation of war, was separated into two cities, pieced backed together, and acted a symbol for both communism and capitalism simultaneously! Berlin’s colorful history plays into the city as we know it today. This tour weaves through Berlin’s history by visiting landmarks such as the impressive Brandenburg Gate, the notorious Berlin Wall and the beautiful Gendarmenmarkt. After the division of the city at the end of the Second World War, the eastern part of Berlin became the capital of the GDR, the socialist regime under soviet influence. The sepereation was cemented in 1961,when the GDR build a wall around West Berlin. Follow us behind this Wall into East Berlin and let us tell you how and why the city was torn apart, when we take a look at the former 'Death Strip' in Bernauer Street, how the uprise against the regime on the 17th of june 1953 on the former Stalinallee came to a bloody end and how the peaceful monday demonstrations in 1989 brought thousands of people to the Alexanderplatz. But we will also show you how life has changed in East Berlin since the reunification when we visit the Hackescher Markt and the New Synagogue on Oranienburger Street, we will talk about how the Stasi, the secret police, controlled and influenced the people of East Berlin and tell you the incredible story about how the people of the GDR won their freedom and brought the wall down, when we get to the East Side Gallery. How did a seemingly rational society come to elect Hitler and the Nazi regime? The Third Reich tour weaves through the city and uncovers Berlin’s role in the rise and fall of National Socialism. The tour starts at the 1936 Olympic stadium, journeys to Platform 17 and visits sites that survived heavy air bombardment during WWII. In the heart of Berlin, you’ll see the remnants of the Nazi government district as well as the former SS and Gestapo headquarters.
