“An island of freedom in a sea of communism:” this phrase defined West Berlin for most of the second half of the 20th century. For over 28 years, this part of Berlin – home of artists, the avant-guard scene and endless nights of decadence – was isolated from the rest of the world by the Berlin Wall. This extensive exploration of the western part of the city takes you from Berlin's pre-history, through the gardens of Charlottenburg Palace and the oldest house in the city, to the Sony center on Potsdamer Platz, and includes the site where the members of Operation Valkyrie were executed.

On this tour, the history of Jewish persecution and the evolution of the Nazi's extensive concentration camp system will be analyzed, visiting Tower A, Barrack 38 and the Appelplatz. We discuss the most notorious prisoners held in the Gestapo prison and examine the original nature of the camp through the photographs and objects preserved in the memorial's exhibitions. This tour uncovers the locations in Berlin instrumental to the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime. Beginning with the impressive Olympic Stadium of 1936, then journeying to Platform 17, from which thousands of Berliners were deported to concentration camps, and traveling to sites that still show the difference between Berlin before and during National Socialism, the surviving architecture helps reveal the history behind those twelve years that changed the world. Coming to a close in the center of the Nazi system of power and repression – the remains of Hilter´s chancellery and the former site of Gestapo and SS headquarters – this comprehensive examination of the Nazi reign of terror is unique in its scope and focus on the traces that still remain in modern-day Berlin.
